Luke 15:7

I tell you that in the same way there will be more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who do not need to repent.

Imagine showing up at a party and no one acknowledges you are there. You walk in the door, fill a cup with punch and stand in the corner, watching everyone else celebrate. It makes you wonder why you even bothered to show up. For many people, that would be a complete nightmare.

That’s not what it’s like in the Kingdom of Heaven, which Jesus compares to a party or feast several times in the Bible. In the gospel of Luke, Jesus says that there is rejoicing in heaven whenever anyone accepts His invitation to repent.

When you show up at God’s party, everyone is happy to see you.

Jesus illustrates this with a series of stories in Luke chapter 15: a shepherd who finds a lost sheep and calls his friends and neighbours to a celebration. A woman who finds a lost coin and throws a party. A father whose son returns home after squandering his inheritance and finds more than just forgiveness, but a lavish feast in his honour.

It’s like a party where each new guest that shows up is another reason to celebrate; a roomful of people excited that you, specifically, made it; a cheer erupting around the room as soon as you walk in the door.

God loves you, accepts you and forgives you. Like the father running out to welcome his wayward son, God is happy you are here. He is overjoyed that you are a part of the Kingdom.

The fact that God and the angels celebrate every new believer is amazing for us as individuals, but it’s also a reminder that the Kingdom of Heaven is bigger than just us. The invitation is for everyone.

2 Peter 3:9

The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.

God and all the angels celebrated when you accepted His invitation and followed Jesus. But God also invites you to look at His house and see that there is still room for more. God calls us to go out to the world and invite them to know Jesus and experience His power to change the world.

We don’t want you to miss this party and God doesn’t want anyone else to miss it either. How can you share the invitation with someone in your life?
